in jackson, mississippi, independent. caller: good morning. newly appointed superintendent, i met with yesterday. we have 30,000 students and 2000 are homeless. 70% of our schools in the city, i visited alternative schools where we had the bus driver and security guards running the alternative schools. we have teachers who are failing these students and failed those students' parents and grandparents. they've been in the school system's 25 for 30 years. we accept this. we fired a coach at southern university yesterday because they went 0-12. how is it we led 75% of our students fail and we continue to retain the same principals and teachers? 76% of our schools in jackson need to be charter schools. this is the only outlet that i see for the future of our children in jackson, mississippi. host: let me throw this into the mix before we go. schools install a tracking system despite protests. ships pinpoint location of students. -- chips. perry, philadelphia, tennessee, democratic caller. how you fix the school system? caller: i appreciate you letting me speak. years ago i was in sout

reed. i also received a report of the same situation at fort jackson in south carolina. a family there to see their nephew graduate from basic training saw the flags of all 50 states and every territory on display, all except the flag of the northern marianas. let me read what they said in that email. congressman, my nephew graduated from basic training in fort jackson, south carolina, yesterday. my niece and my daughter-in-law were looking for the flag to take a picture with the graduate since they couldn't find the flag, so they had to settle with the guam flag. to have their picture taken. please look into this, why the flag was not displayed during basic training graduation. on another occasion, several of my constituents attended a basic combat training graduation at fort jackson, south carolina. the venue where the ceremony took place had flags from all 50 states and every territory except the northern mariana islands. these soldiers -- those soldiers shared their deep disappointment with me. disappointment with me. they felt their command and their country did not recogniz

purpose does the gentlewoman from texas rise? ms. jackson lee: i ask unanimous consent to address the house for one minute. the speaker pro tempore: without objection, the gentlewoman from texas is recognized for one minute. ms. jackson lee: i thank the distinguished gentleman. let me say good morning and wish america a wonderful season but more importantly, i hope everyone had a blessed thanksgiving, and that is what i'd like to speak about. this whole idea of giving thanks and recognizing where we are today. before i start that, very briefly, let me encourage my colleagues to join me in supporting the congressional gold medal mulawa. we fail to recognize children. she was a little girl in pakistan who was willing to stand up to the taliban to say we too deserve education. she is being promoted as person of the year. i hope congress will celebrate her as well. i mention thanksgiving and i believe it's important to focus on that. i ask my colleagues to gather their wits about them, to gather their wits as we reflect on what will approach us in january of 2013. it not be the declin
